Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
