British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
